As part of learning more about the history of Bella Ridge Golf Club, Rick and Carol Podtburg answered these questions about the story of the land, the inspiration for a golf club and more!
What is the history of the Podtburg family in Johnstown, Colorado?
The Podtburg family has a long and storied history in Johnstown, Colorado, with deep roots in agriculture. The family’s journey began in 1968, and in 1979, they purchased a farm that would become central to their agricultural pursuits. Initially, the family operated a dairy farm closer to town, which remained active until 1995. This location is now a residential area, reflecting the growth and development of the community.
In 1995, the Podtburg family relocated their dairy operation to the property now home to Bella Ridge Golf Club, marking a significant expansion and modernization of their business. The dairy farm thrived in this new location and led to the acquisition of other dairy farms through April 2022, when the dairy operations were moved. The family currently manages a large-scale dairy operation, milking 10,000 head at two locations north and east of Greeley, Colorado, approximately 30 minutes northeast of Johnstown. The family’s ongoing commitment to agriculture and their substantial contributions to the local economy highlight their enduring presence in the region.
What was the inspiration to convert the dairy farm to a golf course? With a family of golfers, who first suggested the idea?
The inspiration to convert the Podtburg family’s dairy farm into a golf course was rooted in the family’s shared passion for golf and a keen eye for the land’s natural potential. Over the years, it was often mentioned that the farm’s terrain, with its elevation changes and picturesque views of Longs Peak, would make an ideal setting for a golf course. About 12 years ago, Rick Podtburg, a dedicated golfer, first proposed the idea, noting the area’s lack of golf courses and the land’s suitability for the sport.
As avid golfers, the family embraced Rick’s vision and recognized the unique opportunity to create something special on their property. This decision marked a significant transformation of the land and the family’s business, blending their love of golf with their agricultural heritage.
Where does the name “Bella Ridge” come from for the course name?
The name “Bella Ridge” for the golf course was inspired by the beautiful geography of the site. During the naming process, Rick’s wife, Carol, proposed two options: “Beau Ridge,” which is French for “beautiful ridge,” and “Bella Ridge,” with “Bella” being the Spanish word for “beautiful.” The family felt that “Bella” resonated more with the area’s aesthetic and charm, making “Bella Ridge” the perfect name to reflect the natural beauty and elegance of the course’s surroundings.
